On High Street, Echuca

Southern Quay — Best Restaurant with a Casino Hall

Southern Quay sits above the old wharf reserve on High Street, where wattle still grows thick along the bank and the evening tends to fill the way the port once did — gradually, table by table. A short kitchen sends out Murray cod and river-country dishes most nights, while six felt tables hold five hundred, euchre, crib and canasta behind the dining room. Chips mark points only, nothing is played online, and everything happens in person at 27 High Street. Dinner and a seat at the cards are booked as two separate things, so either can be arranged on its own, or both together.

The short version

What Does a Wharf Keep After the Boats Stop Coming?

“Put the kettle on, the last one’s always late” is not, technically, a house rule at Southern Quay — but it gets said most nights regardless, usually by whoever is closest to the counter when headlights swing off High Street.

Southern Quay sits where the old wharf reserve meets High Street, and it keeps something of the port’s old rhythm — a room fills gradually, not all at once, the way a wharf once filled as boats came in one after another.

Six tables hold most evenings: five hundred and euchre in the middle of the room, crib and canasta nearer the door, and a friendly poker table some nights once the dinner crowd has thinned.

The kitchen keeps its own smaller rhythm, sending out Murray cod and a short list of river-country dishes from six until the tables are full, then easing back for the rest of the night.

What Comes Out of the Kitchen?

Murray cod is the kitchen’s standing main most nights, pan-roasted and served simply, with damper on the side instead of anything heavier.

A yabby and corn chowder usually opens the short menu, made with whatever the river has given up that week; it changes more often than anything else on the list.

Dessert rarely strays from two things: golden syrup dumplings, which the kitchen has never once taken off the menu, and a lemon butter tart on lighter nights.

How the house runs

The Rules the House Keeps Every Night

Southern Quay is open to adults only, eighteen and over, and the house checks identification whenever there is any doubt at all at the door.

Every hand dealt here happens in person on High Street; nothing at Southern Quay is played online, and no app or website stands in for a seat at the table.

Chips handed out at the door carry no cash value and are never bought, sold or wagered; they exist only to keep score across an evening of cards — no wagering and no cash prize, ever.

There are no poker machines anywhere on the premises, and the house has no plans to bring any in — the felt and a house dealer are as far as it goes.

Casino Hall: Six Tables Between the Kitchen and the Door

The card room sits behind the dining room, close enough that the smell of the kitchen drifts through most evenings without a single dish crossing the threshold.

Five hundred and euchre run on the middle tables most nights, with crib and canasta on two smaller tables nearer the door, and a friendly poker table with no buy-in when the room is quiet enough for it.

A house dealer keeps the middle tables moving; chips mark points only, and nothing on the floor is ever played for cash.

About the game

How an Evening of Cards Unfolds

How does a hand usually start?
The house dealer calls players to the middle tables once there are enough for a game, usually not long after the dinner crowd arrives.
Can a first-timer sit down without knowing the rules?
Yes — the house dealer explains five hundred or euchre to anyone new before the first hand is dealt, at no cost.
Do chips carry any value?
No, chips at Southern Quay mark points only; nothing is wagered and no prize is paid out for any table.
Is there a limit to how long a table runs?
Most tables run until the last deal is called, usually around one in the morning, later on quieter nights.
What happens if a table has an odd number of players?
The house dealer will often step in to even out numbers, or move a player to a table with room.
Can regulars keep the same seat each week?
Many do, though no seat is formally reserved — the house simply tends to leave the same chair free out of habit.
